A leadership coach can tell before the call who is ready to commit by asking three questions at booking: what is going on in her role right now, why she wants to act now, and whether she is open to investing in coaching. The answers prepare the conversation and filter out the merely curious.
Why qualify before the call, not during it

For a leadership coach, qualifying means checking, before you give your time, that a person has a real need, a reason to act now, and the intention to invest in coaching. Done during the call, you find out too late: at the end you realize she mostly wanted free advice, or her company was supposed to pay and won't.
Leadership coaching clients often fund their own coaching. That's good news: the decision is hers. But it also means you need to know beforehand whether she is considering that expense for herself. Qualifying early has another benefit: you arrive prepared, with her words in front of you.
The three booking questions
- What is going on in your role right now? A new management role, a difficult team, a promotion in sight, a presentation that scares her. A precise answer shows a real need.
- Why does it matter to act now? An upcoming review, a reorganization, growing fatigue. The trigger tells you whether the call will lead to a decision or a later.
- Are you considering investing in coaching over several months? No amount, just intention. Yes or it depends are good signs. I'm looking for something free saves you both time.
Three written questions at booking reveal more about someone's motivation than half an hour of improvised call.
Read the answers without judging
- Ready. Clear situation, reason to act now, open to investing. Prepare carefully by rereading her words.
- Not yet. The need is there but not the timing or the intention. Share a useful resource and stay in touch.
- Outside your scope. She expects her employer to pay or wants something else entirely. Reply kindly, refer her if you can, and don't block a slot.
Don't filter too hard. Someone who writes little isn't necessarily unmotivated. When in doubt, keep the call and open with her answers.
Open the call with her answers
Start by reflecting what she wrote: you're taking over a team next month and you're afraid of not being taken seriously, is that right? She feels heard and the conversation goes straight to what matters. At the end, connect your program to her reason for acting now. A leadership coach who qualifies at booking spends calls with people who are ready, and arrives at each one prepared.
