Life coach: a free resource that brings discovery calls

In shortA free resource brings discovery calls when it answers a precise question your future client is already asking, when it asks for an email address in return, and when it is followed by a short series of messages that lead to your calendar.
The diagramThe path, in 4 steps
  1. 1Name your client's questionSpot the situation that brings her to you and the question she types into a search engine late at night.
  2. 2Create a useful first stepA short exercise or audio she can use the same day: your coaching in miniature, without the final solution.
  3. 3Place the resource in three fixed spotsA page on your website with an email field, your bio link, one line at the end of every post.
  4. 4Write the message series that leads to the callThree or four automatic messages: deliver, explain the block, show the difference, offer the discovery call.

A free resource brings discovery calls when it answers a precise question your future client is already asking, when it asks for an email address in return, and when it is followed by a short series of messages that lead to your calendar. Without those three conditions, it gets downloaded, then forgotten.

Why your posts don't lead to calls

You publish, people like it, sometimes someone comments 'thank you, this resonates'. Then nothing. The problem is not your content. The problem is that a post leaves no trace: the person reads it, closes the app and goes back to her day. You have neither her address nor any way to speak to her again.

A free resource is a short piece of content, offered in exchange for an email address, that solves one first concrete problem and shows how you coach. It turns a passing reader into someone you can contact again. It is the front door of your life coaching ecosystem: first she reads you, then she receives from you, then she talks to you.

The difference with a post is time. A post lives a few hours. A resource works for months: it waits on your website, in your bio, in your email signature, and every new interested person can ask for it without you being online.

Which free resource should a life coach offer?

Forget the complete forty-page guide. Nobody reads it, and it takes you a month to write. A life coach's free resource works when it solves a problem the person has tonight, not in six months.

Start from your ideal client and the situation that brings her to you. A career change that keeps stalling. A separation after which she no longer knows what she wants. A feeling of going round in circles despite a life that 'looks fine'. In each of these situations there is a question she types into a search engine late at night. Your resource answers that question.

Formats that suit a practice that is just starting:

  • a one-page guided exercise, the one you use in a first session;
  • a short set of questions to clarify a decision;
  • a few-minute audio recording, in your voice, that sets a frame and a first step;
  • a list of signs that it is time to get support.

The rule for choosing: the person must be able to use it the same day and feel a small difference. That small difference is your coaching in miniature. She has just experienced it, she no longer needs to take your word for it.

One caution: do not hand over a final solution. You give the first step, the one that opens what comes next. What comes next is you.

How do you get it out there without spending your days on it?

A life coach does not need an audience for a free resource to work: she needs a precise question and a place to ask it. Put the resource in three fixed places, once and for all:

  • a simple page on your website, with one sentence that names the problem, one sentence that says what the resource gives, and an email field;
  • the link in your bio on the network where your clients spend time;
  • the end of every post or article you publish, in one line: 'if this question speaks to you, I have an exercise for you'.

Then your posts change role. They no longer try to convince someone to book a call cold. They describe the situation, they name the question, and they point to the resource. That is far easier to write and far more natural to read: you are no longer selling, you are helping.

You can also offer it by hand. When someone comments, when an acquaintance says 'I don't know where I am anymore', you have something concrete to send. That gesture replaces the 'we should talk some day' that leads nowhere.

What happens after the download?

This is where everything is decided, and it is the step new coaches forget. The discovery call gets booked in the follow-up messages, not on the download page.

Prepare a short series of messages, three or four, sent automatically over about ten days:

  • The first delivers the resource and says in two sentences how to use it.
  • The second describes what happens when someone does the exercise alone, and why people often stop halfway.
  • The third shows, through an anonymised client situation, what coaching changes compared with the exercise alone.
  • The last one offers the discovery call, simply, with the link to your calendar and what happens on it.

Each message answers a question she is asking, in order: 'does this work?', 'why am I stuck?', 'is this for me?', 'how do we start?'. You do not push. You are already coaching, before the first appointment.

Write this series once. It will run for every new sign-up while you are in session.

A free resource does not replace your visibility work: it gives it somewhere to go. Every post, every conversation, every referral can now lead somewhere, and that place works for you day and night. If you want to build this ecosystem with an outside eye, you can book a call.

FAQ

What free resource should a life coach offer?
Something short the person can use the same day: a one-page guided exercise, a set of questions to clarify a decision, or a few-minute audio in your voice. It solves one first concrete problem and shows how you coach, without giving the full solution.
Do I need an audience for a lead magnet to bring coaching clients?
No. A free resource works as soon as it sits in fixed places: a page on your website, your bio link, the end of your posts. Any interested person can ask for it while you are offline, and the follow-up messages do the rest.
How do I turn a download into a discovery call?
With a short automatic series of three or four messages over about ten days: deliver the resource, explain why people get stuck alone, show what coaching changes, then offer the discovery call with a link to your calendar.
Why do my life coaching posts never lead to a call?
Because a post leaves no trace: the person reads it, closes the app and you have no way to talk to her again. A free resource offered in exchange for an email address creates that link and lets you guide her up to the booking.
