A life coach fills their calendar by choosing one specific situation to help with instead of a broad audience. A clear niche does three things: the right people recognise themselves, your network knows who to send your way, and you know where to find them. Choosing does not close doors. It makes your door visible.

Why does a life coach who helps everyone stay invisible?

A niche is the precise answer to who do you help, at what moment, to achieve what? It is not an age bracket or a job title. It is a situation people recognise instantly.

When you introduce yourself as a life coach for anyone who wants to move forward, you are not lying: you could help many people. But nobody thinks that is for me. And nobody thinks of you when a friend says they no longer know what to do with their life.

Referrals, which keep a life coaching practice alive, only work with a simple sentence. She helps people change careers after fifteen years in the same role travels in a second. She does life coaching does not travel at all.

A specialised life coach does not help fewer people; they are found by more people.

How do you choose who you work with?

Do not look for the perfect niche in your head. Cross four criteria and write your answers down:

  • Your story. Which transitions have you been through yourself? A career change, moving abroad, grief, rebuilding after a breakup. You coach best what you understand from the inside.
  • Your results. Who have you already helped change, even for free, even as a friend? Those people share something worth naming.
  • Access. Do you know where to find these people? Which places, groups, professionals? A niche you cannot meet will not fill a calendar.
  • Commitment. Do people in this situation have a strong enough need, and the means, to commit to several weeks of coaching?

The right niche often sits where all four overlap. Put it in one sentence: I help [who] going through [which situation] to [achieve which change]. If you can say it out loud without feeling boxed in, you have a lead.

How do you test a niche before committing?

A niche is validated through conversations, not thinking. For a few weeks, introduce yourself with the new sentence and watch what happens.

  • Do people say oh, I know someone? Your sentence is clear.
  • Do people in that situation reuse your words to describe themselves? You named their reality.
  • Can you actually get conversations with them? Access is real.

Write down what you hear. People's exact words become your workshop titles, your web page copy and your discovery call questions. If nothing moves after several weeks of steady presence, adjust one criterion, not everything.

Why is the fear of excluding people unfounded?

Choosing a niche feels scary: what if you lose everyone else? In practice, your niche is what you show, not a gate. Someone outside it who feels you can help will still come. You simply stop spending energy talking to everyone at once.

Your niche can evolve too. You choose it for the season ahead and refine it with every client.

A life coach's niche is a communication decision before it is a career decision. You remain a life coach with all your skills. You only choose the door people walk through.

In short

To fill your life coaching calendar, choose one precise situation by crossing your story, your results, access and commitment. Test your sentence in real conversations, keep people's own words, and adjust without starting over.

FAQ

How do I choose a niche as a life coach?
A life coach chooses a niche by crossing four criteria: their own story, the people they have already helped change, real access to those people, and their ability to commit to coaching. The niche is then written as one sentence: who, which situation, which change they want to reach.
Does a life coach really need a niche?
A niche does not stop you from helping other people, but it makes a life coach findable and easy to refer. A precise sentence travels by word of mouth; a general introduction is forgotten. A niche is mainly a communication choice, and it can evolve as you gain experience.
How do I know if my life coaching niche is working?
Test it in conversations for a few weeks. If people reply that they know someone, if people in that situation reuse your words to describe themselves, and if you can get conversations with them, the niche works. If not, adjust one criterion at a time instead of starting over.
