You say yes to every prospect. It makes sense: each lead = a chance. Except you're burning 10 hours/month on calls with people who will never sign. Why? Because you accepted them too early, without checking three invisible signals that arrive BEFORE the call.

Signal 1: The prospect asks for a discount before even understanding the offer

It's the most obvious one and you miss it. He contacts you via WhatsApp or email with a question like: “How much does it cost? Is it expensive?”

Translation: he's looking for the lowest price, not the solution. If he thought he needed you, he'd ask a question about his problem first (“How do you...”). Price first = no budget, or worse, no intention to buy.

Action: don't respond. Or respond with a question: “Before we talk about that, what's your biggest blocker right now?”. If he brings the price back up, refuse the call. You save 1 hour.

Signal 2: He asks for a free diagnosis before confirming the call

The prospect tells you: “I'll first see what you propose, then we'll talk about it.”

What he's really saying: “Give me free work, I'll judge, and maybe I'll buy something from you.”

The free diagnosis doesn't create momentum. It creates indecision. The prospect thinks: “I'll think about it” (= never). And you've lost 2 hours.

Action: offer the discovery call WITHOUT diagnosis. If the call reveals he needs help, you discuss the offer after. Not before. Serious prospects accept. The others disappear.

Signal 3: The answer to your qualifying question is vague or defensive

You ask him: “What's your current revenue?” or “How much are you willing to invest?”

Red flags:

  • “I'm not sure, it depends.”
  • “I'll check with my partner.”
  • “I'd prefer to discuss it on the call.”
  • No response at all.

These answers mean: no decision authority, no defined budget, or not really motivated.

Action: follow up ONCE with clarity: “I need to know if we're aligned before the call. Budget between 2k and 10k, does that work for you?”. If he hesitates or doesn't respond, cancel.

Conclusion

Each prospect you refuse now = 1 hour of your time saved. And 1 hour is 10 more calls with people who are actually going to sign. Start with these three filters this week.

FAQ

But what if I refuse and it was a good customer?

Zero risk. A good customer answers your three questions clearly. If he doesn't, it's because he's not ready. And an unready customer = difficult signature = low margin. Better 5 serious calls than 10 calls with noise.

How do I politely refuse without losing the prospect?

Be direct: “I see you want a free diagnosis first. I work differently: discovery call first, offer after if we're aligned. Does that work for you?”. If he says yes, he'll do it. If he says no, he wasn't serious.

What if my call-to-signature conversion rate is already low?

That's EXACTLY why you need to filter first. A low rate means you're accepting too many bad prospects. Filter first, then optimize the call. In that order.
