Overview — Between diagnosis and offer: where you lose your client

The diagnosis goes well. Your client validates the problem, sees the value, says "yes, let's move forward". You hang up, you write the offer. Then radio silence.

When you send the offer three days later, they've already moved on. Or worse: they reply "we'll think about it" and disappear.

This gap between the diagnosis and the written offer—that's where you really lose them. Not at prospecting, not at signature—there, in the middle. And almost nobody sees it.

1. The enthusiasm from the diagnosis evaporates

The diagnosis creates artificial energy. Your client just realized a problem, you validated it, they leave the call energized. But the next morning, reality sets in: they have 50 emails, three crises, a meeting running late.

The energy from the diagnosis disappears in 24 hours. That's normal. It's human nature.

If you don't send the offer within 4 hours after the call, you need to follow up before sending the offer. A short follow-up: "We talked about X, here's the quick summary and the offer arrives tomorrow morning."

Without this follow-up, your client has already forgotten why it was urgent.

2. The offer doesn't match what they heard

You diagnosed verbally. Then you write a formal offer, with sections, prices, terms. Your client reads it and thinks: "That's not exactly what we said on the call."

Friction builds. They ask for changes. You make them. They ask another question. You go back and forth. Two weeks pass. They've changed their mind.

The solution: write the offer as a continuation of the call, not like a legal document. Use their words. Quote a phrase they said. Make the offer an exact translation of the diagnosis, not an interpretation.

3. You don't create an internal deadline

Your client has no reason to sign quickly. The offer has no expiration date. You say "no pressure", which means "you can think about this in three months".

But a consultant with no deadline doesn't act. They think. Then they forget.

Create a legitimate deadline in the offer: "This pricing is valid until [date]", or "Spots for the January cohort are limited to 5". Something real, not a trick.

Without a deadline, your client disappears.

Conclusion

The gap between the diagnosis and the offer is where 40% of deals die. Not because the offer is bad, but because you let the energy evaporate, because the offer doesn't match the call, and because there's no sense of urgency.

Three simple actions: quick follow-up before the offer, an offer that sounds like you, a real deadline.

FAQ

How much time between the diagnosis and sending the offer?

Ideally 4 hours. Maximum 24 hours. Beyond that, the energy has disappeared. If you need to wait, follow up with a short message the same day to maintain momentum.

How do I create a deadline without looking like I'm forcing?

Use a real reason: "Spots for the next cohort close on [date]" or "This pricing is valid until [date] because I'm revising my prices next month". Real, legitimate, creates urgency.

What do I do if the client says 'we'll think about it' after the diagnosis?

That's a soft no. Ask: "What do you need to think about?" If they can't answer clearly, they don't have enough urgency. Follow up in 5 days with a specific question, not an offer.
