You spent 3 hours this week on discovery calls. Result? Zero deals in your pipeline. Worse: you talked to people who had no budget, no urgency, and no authority to decide. Welcome to every consultant's scaling nightmare. The problem isn't your pitch. It's that you're qualifying poorly, too late, and wasting enormous amounts of time. Good news: there's a dead simple method to filter out 80% of bad prospects in under 3 minutes. And that's exactly what we're going to cover.

## Why qualification is your #1 scalability lever

Before I give you the 3 magic questions, you need to understand something: every minute spent with a bad prospect is a minute lost with a good one. And at £1M–5M turnover, you can't afford this haemorrhage anymore.

I'm going to give you a figure that will sting. An entrepreneur I coached last year spent 15 hours a week on discovery calls. When we analysed his CRM notes, we discovered that 70% of those calls should never have happened. Wrong company size, no budget, no urgency. Result: 10 hours 50 minutes of pure wasted time every week.

With proper qualification upfront, he could have cut that down to 4–5 hours of quality calls. And guess what? His conversion rate went from 8% to 23%. Not because he became a better salesman. But because he was finally talking to the right people.

That's what qualification does. It gives you more deals with less effort.

## The 3 questions that change everything

These 3 questions must be asked BEFORE the discovery call, ideally via email or a form. Why? Because you need to filter without investing your time directly.

Here's the formula:

### Question 1: "What is your current turnover?"

This is your first barrier. You need to know the company size. Why? Because a sole trader and an SME don't have the same problems or the same budget.

Concrete example: if you're offering a service at £15k per month and the prospect has £200k annual turnover, they can't afford it. Full stop. No call needed.

My rule of thumb? I only qualify companies that have at least 3–4x my average ticket value in annual turnover. If you're selling £10k, you're targeting businesses with £30k–40k+ turnover.

In your response, you either accept or you say "thanks, not the right fit".

### Question 2: "Do you have a budget allocated for this issue in 2024?"

Now you're hitting the nerve: budget. A prospect without budget isn't a prospect. It's a long-term lead. And you don't have time for that when you're scaling.

The question is deliberately vague ("for this issue"). Why? Because you want an honest answer, not a dodge. If the person says "yes, we have £20k" or "no, we don't", you have your answer. If the answer is fuzzy ("maybe", "we'll see"), it's a no.

In my experience, out of 100 prospects who say "yes" to question 1, only 40–50% say "yes" to question 2. That gives you the scale of filtering.

### Question 3: "Who else needs to be involved in this decision?"

This is the decision-maker question. You need to know if you're talking to the right person or if you'll have to convince 5 others.

A good prospect tells you: "I decide" or "Me plus the finance director". A bad prospect tells you: "I need to talk to the CEO, the marketing director, and we'll see".

Why? Because the more decision-makers there are, the longer the cycle stretches. And the more you risk losing the deal along the way.

My rule: maximum 2 decision-makers. Beyond that, I ask to speak directly to the real decision-maker. If that's not possible, it's a no.

## The format for asking these questions without killing your conversion

This is crucial. If you ask these 3 questions clumsily ("How much do you earn? Have you got the cash?"), you'll put off even good prospects.

Here's how a client did it successfully:

**Qualification email** (after initial contact):

"Hi [Name],

Based on what we've discussed, I'd like to make sure this is a good fit before we talk further.

3 quick questions:

1. What's your current turnover? (just to understand the scale)
2. Do you have a budget allocated for [your solution] in 2024?
3. Who else should be in the conversation?

Thanks!"

It's direct, professional, and doesn't put off good prospects. Bad ones? They'll tell you they have no budget or won't reply. Bingo.

## What happens next: sorting and action

Once you have the answers, you have 4 scenarios:

**Scenario A: Yes + Yes + Clear decision-maker = CALL IMMEDIATELY**
This is your hot lead. You call within 24 hours. No delay.

**Scenario B: Yes + Yes + Multiple decision-makers = CALL WITH CONDITIONS**
You call, but you ask to speak to the main decision-maker. If that's not possible, you say "let's talk again in 3 months".

**Scenario C: Yes + No (budget) = NURTURE**
No call now. You add them to a nurture email sequence (1 email every 15 days). Maybe they'll have budget in 6 months.

**Scenario D: No (turnover) or fuzzy answer = BIN**
You say thanks politely and move on. No second call, no follow-up. Life's too short.

A B2B client I worked with applied this to the letter. Result over 3 months: 60% of his calls were now with category A or B prospects. His conversion rate went from 12% to 31%. And crucially, he gained 12 hours a week.
💡 💡 **The trap to avoid**: Don't ask these questions DURING the discovery call. It's too late. You've already lost 30 minutes. Ask them BEFORE. Via email, form, or a 5-minute phone call with your assistant.

## Adapt the questions to YOUR model

These 3 questions are universal, but you need to adapt them. A few examples:

**If you're selling coaching at £5k per month:**
Question 1: "Are you a solo operation or do you have a team?"
Question 2: "Do you have a coaching budget planned?"
Question 3: "Do you decide or do you need to check with someone?"

**If you're selling strategy consulting at £30k:**
Question 1: "What's your turnover?"
Question 2: "Do you have a consulting budget allocated?"
Question 3: "Who's involved in this decision?"

The structure stays the same. Only the context changes.

The important thing: you must have a clear answer to each one. No fuzz. No "we'll see". Yes or no.
💡 🚀 **Immediate action**: Write your 3 qualification questions today. Add them to your prospecting process (email, form, or call). Measure in 2 weeks how much time you save and how much your conversion rate increases. You'll be surprised.

Qualification isn't sexy. It's not a "growth hack" strategy that'll buzz on LinkedIn. But it's the difference between an entrepreneur who thrives and one who burns out. At £1M–5M turnover, every minute counts. And these 3 questions let you move from "I talk to everyone" to "I talk only to the right people".

Result: more deals, less stress, and a pipeline you can actually close.
## Frequently asked questions

**If I lower my price to 3K€ to get more prospects, will that actually help me scale?**

No. The problem isn't your price—it's bad qualification. A client I coached was losing 10h50 weekly on wrong-fit calls. By filtering upfront with minimum revenue (3-4x his ticket), confirmed budget, and a single decision-maker, his conversion rate jumped 8% to 23%. Fewer prospects, more deals. Cutting price just attracts more bad fits.

**How do I ask my three questions without sounding too pushy or like I'm interrogating them?**

Use email BEFORE the call. Say "I want to make sure this is a good fit" then ask the three questions: current revenue, budget for 2024, and who else decides. It's professional, not aggressive. Good prospects reply. Bad ones don't or admit they have no budget. It filters without friction.

**Do I really have to reject leads before the call, or should I talk to everyone?**

Reject them outright. A prospect without budget, too small, or with 5 decision-makers won't convert. Of 100 prospects, only 40-50% have real budget. Using all three filters means 60% of your calls are qualified. You save 12 hours weekly and boost conversion from 12% to 31%. That's not cruel—it's smart.

**What if a prospect has budget but three people need to approve the decision?**

Call them, but insist on speaking to the main decision-maker. If that's impossible, say "let's reconnect in three months." More than 2 decision-makers = longer sales cycle + higher chance of losing the deal. My rule: max 2. Beyond that, it's a conditional call, not an immediate yes.
