# A vague offer costs you more than you think
*Reading time : 4 min · Offer & Positioning · 2026-06-05*
**In short :** Chaque semaine, des coachs et consultants perdent des clients potentiels non pas à cause de leur prix, non pas à cause de leur expertise — mais parce que leur offre…

## How this article unfolds

1. Prospects bail within 10 seconds — Facing a vague offer, the overloaded brain of a prospect refuses to work it out and simply moves on.
2. Confusion bleeds money silently — Unqualified leads, price haggling, wrong-fit clients and zero referrals quietly drain the business over time.
3. Three questions need instant answers — Who it's for, what problem it solves and what concrete result it delivers must be jargon-free so prospects recognize themselves right away.
4. Real-world testing proves the fix works — Client interviews, a 30-second pitch test and a LinkedIn post reveal whether the reworded offer is finally clear and desired.

Every week, coaches and consultants lose potential clients — not because of their prices, not because of their expertise — but because their offer isn't clear enough. Clarity is the most underrated sales skill in independent consulting. And the cost of this confusion is far higher than you imagine.

When a prospect lands on your website, reads your LinkedIn bio, or listens to your pitch — they're doing one thing: trying to understand what you do, who you do it for, and what they'll get out of it. If that understanding requires more than 10 seconds of mental effort, they move on. Not because they don't need you. Because their information-saturated brain refuses to work for you for free.

## The invisible cost of ambiguity

A vague offer doesn't just cost you lost clients. It costs you credibility, energy, and confidence. Here's what actually happens when your offer lacks clarity:

- ✦ You attract unqualified leads who don't understand your value — and negotiate your rates
- ✦ You spend more time explaining your offer than actually selling it
- ✦ You lack confidence on calls because even you struggle to articulate it
- ✦ You end up accepting clients who don't match your ICP just to fill the gap
- ✦ Your LinkedIn content lacks cohesion and impact

I've worked with over 80 independent consultants and coaches over the past 3 years. In 90% of cases, the first real blocker wasn't acquisition or closing — it was positioning. The offer was either too generic, too complex, or too focused on methods rather than outcomes.

> People don't buy what you do. They buy the result they get from working with you.

## The 3 dimensions of a clear offer

A clear offer answers three fundamental questions immediately and without ambiguity. These three dimensions are non-negotiable if you want to convert without friction.

**1. Who is it for?** Your ICP must be defined precisely enough that when someone reads your bio, they immediately recognize themselves. Not 'ambitious entrepreneurs' — but 'independent consultants with 2-5 years of experience who want to go from 5k to 15k/month without sacrificing their freedom'.

**2. What problem do you solve?** Frame the problem in your client's language, not your industry jargon. Not 'I help you optimize your positioning strategy' — but 'I help you stop chasing clients and start attracting ones who understand and accept your rates from the very first call'.

**3. What concrete result?** Numbers, timeline, transformation. 'In 4 months, you'll be able to sign 2 premium clients per month at a minimum rate of 3000€.' The result must be memorable, credible and desirable.

## How to clarify your offer in 5 steps

Offer clarification isn't a theoretical exercise. It's an iterative process done with your real clients and prospects. Here's the method I use with my BIZZY clients:

- ✦ **Step 1 — Client interviews:** Call 5 current or past clients. Ask them: 'In your own words, what did I help you do?' Their answers are your best marketing copy
- ✦ **Step 2 — Fear mapping:** List your ideal client's 3 main fears before working with you. Your offer must directly address these fears
- ✦ **Step 3 — Elevator pitch test:** You must be able to explain your offer in 30 seconds to someone who doesn't know your industry. If you can't, reformulate
- ✦ **Step 4 — Before/after contrast:** Clearly describe where your client is before working with you and where they'll be after. This contrast is the heart of your offer
- ✦ **Step 5 — Field validation:** Launch your reformulated offer on LinkedIn with a simple post. Measure engagement and questions received — these are your clarity indicators

Clarity isn't fixed. It evolves with your experience, your clients, and the market. But each iteration must bring you more precision, more congruence between what you promise and what you deliver. This is the foundational work that separates consultants who regularly sign premium clients from those who struggle to explain their value on every call.

The market doesn't always reward the best expert. It rewards the one whose offer is most understandable, most desirable, and most aligned with what their ideal client is looking for right now. Your next action: go back to your sales page or LinkedIn bio. Ask yourself honestly — can someone who doesn't know me understand in 10 seconds what I do and for whom? If the answer is no, that's your number one priority.
