# Life coach: three signs a client is not ready to sign
*Reading time : 4 min · Sales · 2026-08-05*
**In short :** Dire oui à toutes les demandes épuise un coach de vie et abîme ses résultats. Trois signaux pour repérer la cliente pas prête, et comment refuser avec soin.

## How this article unfolds

1. Listen for a real situation — A vague request, even after one follow-up question, shows motivation is not there.
2. Filter on three signs — Vague need, no room to act, expectations beyond coaching: two signs rule it out.
3. Decline with care — Name it, explain without judging, suggest a path, stay in touch.
4. Screen upstream — Your page and booking form state what the program asks before any call.

A life coach should say no to a client who is not ready when three signs show up on the discovery call: no specific situation, no room to change, or an expectation coaching cannot meet. Saying no is not closing the door. It protects your results, your energy and the person herself.

## Why life coaches struggle to say no

Saying no in life coaching means not starting a program with someone for whom it is not the right moment or the right setting, even if she is ready to pay.

When you are starting out, every enquiry feels like a lifeline. Your calendar is half empty, you doubt yourself, and someone says yes. Turning her down feels absurd. Yet taking on a client who is not ready is expensive. Sessions go round in circles. She cancels, reschedules, comes back without trying anything. You start wondering whether you can really coach. She leaves disappointed and says so to others. Meanwhile your energy is no longer available for the person who was ready.

## Three signs a client is not ready

**No specific situation.** You ask what brings her and the answer stays vague: I just want to feel better. Ask once more what is happening in her life right now that makes her look for help today. If it stays vague, the motivation is not there yet.

**No room for change.** She wants things to move but has neither time nor energy to do anything between sessions. Life coaching needs commitment between sessions; without it, nothing shifts.

**An expectation coaching cannot meet.** She wants someone to decide for her, or she is in distress that calls for medical or psychological care. Here, saying no is not only a business choice, it is a responsibility.

One sign alone is not always enough. Two together almost always mean no.

## How do you say no without hurting her?

- Name what you heard: what she is going through is real and she wants it to change.
- Explain, without judgment, why now is not the right time for your kind of support.
- Offer another path: a free resource, a book, a health professional if needed, or simply an invitation to come back when she has room.
- Stay in touch: someone who was not ready in March may be ready in September.

## How do you avoid getting there?

The best refusal is the one you never need to make. Say on your page who you work with and what your program asks: a session every two weeks and some time each week to move forward. Add one or two questions to your booking form, such as what makes her want to start now. And treat the discovery call as a real conversation, not a pitch: you are checking whether you can help, not trying to convince.

A life coach who knows how to say no signs stronger programs, and satisfied clients become her best referrals.

## Frequently asked questions

**How do I know if a client is ready for life coaching?**

A client is ready for life coaching when she describes a specific situation, has room to take action between sessions, and expects what coaching can actually provide. If two of these are missing on the discovery call, it is usually not the right moment to start.

**How do I turn down a coaching client kindly?**

Name what you heard, explain without judgment why now is not the right time, suggest another path such as a resource or a health professional, and stay in touch. A careful refusal leaves a good impression, and the person often comes back once she is ready.

**Should a new life coach accept every client?**

No. A life coach who takes on someone who is not ready loses time, starts doubting herself and gets weak results. It is better to screen through your page and booking form, then keep your energy for committed clients who later become referrals.
