# How life coaches turn word of mouth into steady referrals
*Reading time : 4 min · Marketing · 2026-10-09*
**In short :** Tes clients peuvent t'en amener d'autres, mais pas tout seuls. Le moment où tu le demandes, la phrase que tu donnes, et le relais qui suit.

## How this article unfolds

1. A result the client names — Mid-coaching, they describe a concrete change: that is the signal the request can be made.
2. The ask inside the session — You ask for a specific introduction instead of hoping to be mentioned one day.
3. A sentence and a link to forward — Who you help, on what, and the first step: enough to be passed on without rewriting anything.
4. The loop closed — You tell the person what their referral led to, and another one follows.

Your current clients are the most accessible source of new clients you have. They have lived through your coaching and they already mention it. What is missing is the moment you ask, and the sentence you hand them. Two small moves, not a campaign.

## What word of mouth really is for a life coach

Word of mouth is the mechanism by which someone you have coached mentions your work to a person who needs it, at the exact moment that need is said out loud. It does not reward the quality of your coaching. It rewards how easily your work can be described in one sentence.

That is where referrals quietly disappear. Your client is happy. Someone asks what they have been up to, they say they are working with a coach and that it helps a lot. The other person nods, and the conversation moves on. Nothing was wrong. There was simply nothing to act on: who you work with, on what, and how to reach you.

**A life coach does not need an audience to receive steady enquiries. A life coach needs every person they have coached to know exactly what to say.**

## When should you ask for a referral?

Not at the end. Ask right after a result your client names themselves: the session where they tell you they finally set the boundary you had been working on, or sent the message they had been putting off for months. At that moment they have a story, and they want to tell it.

In a closing session, the attention is elsewhere. You review, you say goodbye, you turn the page. The request lands too late and sounds like paperwork.

Think of the people who did not sign, too. Someone who said not right now after a discovery call knows your work, enjoyed the conversation, and has no reason to keep your name to themselves. They can refer you without ever becoming a client.

## What exactly do you hand them?

A sentence, not a brochure. Three ingredients are enough:

- who you help
- what you help them decide or change
- the first step, and the link to take it

Hand it over ready to forward, in the words a friend would actually use: I worked with a life coach who helps people in career transition. She helps you decide when you have been going round in circles for months. There is a first call, I will send you the link.

Two mistakes cost you here. The first is mixing up a public testimonial with a private introduction. They are two different requests, and asking for both at once gets you neither. The second is paying for referrals. People refer you because they want to help someone they like, not to earn a discount. Say thank you, do not pay.

The link matters as much as the sentence. If it leads to a page that does not say in one line what you do and offers no first step, the person who was sent to you arrives, does not understand, and leaves. Word of mouth brings people to your door. Your door has to open.

## Why it stops, and how to keep it running

Because it runs on your memory. You think about it during a busy week, you forget the month after, and enquiries go back to being random. Three anchors make it regular:

- one line per client in your notes: referral asked or not, and when
- a fixed reminder at the end of each phase of coaching, not whenever it crosses your mind
- one up-to-date place to send people, the same for everyone

Then close the loop. When someone who was referred gets in touch, tell the person who sent them, and tell them what came of it. A referral that is thanked and followed up invites another one. A referral that vanishes into silence never repeats.

You do not need more visibility to fill your diary. You need every person who has worked with you to leave with a sentence and a link. [Book a call](https://call.bizzyconsulting.agency/) and we will look at where your practice is losing its referrals.
## Frequently asked questions

**How do I ask for a referral without making my client uncomfortable?**

Ask right after a result they named themselves, and make the request specific instead of vague: do you know anyone going through the same thing right now? Then hand them a sentence they can forward and a link. A vague request feels awkward, a clear one feels helpful.

**When is the best time to ask a coaching client for a referral?**

During the coaching, not in the final session. The right moment is when your client describes a concrete change: a boundary they set, a decision they had postponed for months. At the end, attention is on the review and the request sounds like paperwork.

**Should I offer a discount in exchange for referrals?**

No. People refer you because they want to help someone they care about, and a commission turns that gesture into a transaction, often cooling it down. Thank them, tell them what came of the introduction, and keep the same prices for everyone.

**Can word of mouth alone fill a life coach's calendar?**

It can carry much of your enquiries in the first year, as long as it is asked for rather than hoped for: one request at the end of each phase, a sentence ready to forward, and a link to a page that states what you do and offers a first step. Left to chance, it arrives in waves.
