# Life coach discovery call: how to guide it to a clear decision
*Reading time : 4 min · Sales · 2026-10-04*
**In short :** L'appel découverte d'un coach de vie glisse vite en séance gratuite. Comment cadrer l'échange, quelles questions poser, et que répondre à « je dois réfléchir ».

## How this article unfolds

1. State the frame — Flow, upcoming offer and the right to say no, within the first three minutes.
2. Weigh the cost of waiting — Five questions that help the person hear their own situation.
3. Summarise then offer — Use their words, then present destination, stages, length and price.
4. Get an answer or a date — Explore the hesitation, set a decision date, accept a no gracefully.

A life coach guides a discovery call to a decision by setting a frame in the first minutes, helping the person weigh what their current situation is costing them, then presenting the program clearly. The goal is not for them to leave relieved. The goal is for them to leave knowing whether they are moving forward with you or not.

## Why does a life coach discovery call turn into a free session?

A discovery call is a conversation aimed at a decision, not at relief. For a life coach, the line is thin. People open up fast: a breakup, a job that drains them, a life that no longer feels like theirs. You want to help right away. You reframe, suggest an idea, give an exercise.

At the end, they feel better. They thank you warmly. And they never come back, because they got what they needed in the moment: being heard and a little clarity.

**A successful life coach discovery call leaves the person with a clear question in mind, not a problem half solved.** Relief closes the subject. Clarity opens the decision.

## How do you frame the call from the first minutes?

The first three minutes set the tone. Explain the flow before you begin:

*We have forty-five minutes. I will start by asking questions to understand where you are. Then, if I think I can help, I will show you how I work. At the end, you tell me whether it feels right or not. Both answers are fine with me.*

This does three things. It shows you know where you are going. It signals that an offer will come, so nobody is caught off guard. And it gives permission to say no, which relaxes people enough to consider a yes.

Then hold that frame. If the person launches into a long story, listen, then gently bring it back: *Let me pause you there, this matters. What would you like to be different six months from now?*

## Which questions lead the person to a decision?

Good questions are not for you to form an opinion. They help the person hear their own situation. Five are enough, in this order:

- **Where are you today?** Let them describe the concrete situation.
- **How long has it been like this?** The answer often shows how long they have already waited.
- **What is staying like this costing you?** Energy, sleep, relationships, plans on hold. This is the question that matters most.
- **What have you already tried on your own?** It shows why support makes sense now.
- **Why talk about it now, and not last year?** It reveals the trigger and the real motivation.

Then summarise in their words. That summary is the bridge to your offer. Present your program in a few sentences: destination, stages, length, price. And let them respond.

## What do you say when they need to think about it?

**When a client says they need to think about it, there is usually a question that has not been asked yet.** Ask gently: *Of course. What is making you hesitate? The timing, the price, or the fear it will not work for you?*

If it is the price, talk about payment options. If it is the timing, come back to the cost of waiting they described themselves. If it is fear, explain how the program moves step by step.

If they genuinely need time, set a date together. A decision with a date stays alive. A decision without one fades away. And if the answer is no, accept it without pushing. A clear no frees your spot and keeps the door open for later.

## In short

A life coach discovery call is a path to a decision: a stated frame, questions that weigh the cost of waiting, a summary in their words, a clear offer, and an answer or a date.

## Frequently asked questions

**How do you run a discovery call as a life coach?**

A life coach runs a discovery call by explaining the flow upfront, asking questions that help the person weigh what their situation is costing them, then summarising in their words before presenting the program, its length and its price. The call ends with an answer or a set date.

**How do I stop my discovery call from becoming a free coaching session?**

Set a clear frame in the first minutes: questions first, then your program, then a decision. Listen without starting to coach, and gently steer the conversation back to what the person wants to be different in the coming months instead of solving it on the spot.

**What should a life coach say when a client needs to think about it?**

Ask gently what is making them hesitate: timing, price or fear it will not work. Each answer needs a different response. If they truly need time, agree on a date to talk again, because a decision without a date usually fades away before it is ever made.
